The Armenian Higher Education System

The Ministry of Education and Science is responsible for the education sector in Armenia. The Ministry develops and implements policies, standards and strategies related to higher education. 

Higher Education Stats

The number of higher education institutions in the Republic of Armenia:

State Universities: 26; Out of which 4 are internationally managed and 33 are non-state licensed

Private Universities: 40, out of which 31 are Accredited Universities.
83% of state universities and 76% of non-state universities are situated in Yerevan and others are located in 8 provinces (Marzes) of the Republic of Armenia

Higher Education Institutions in Armenia: An Outline

Higher education in the Republic of Armenia is offered by many different types of higher education institutions, such as universities, academies, institutes and a conservatory. At these higher education institutions are offered a wide range of subjects. 

Following are the higher education institutions in the Republic of Armenia:

University: These higher education institutions provide undergraduate, postgraduate and supplementary education in a wide range of fields, such as science and technology, natural and sociological, and cultural studies. In addition, these institutions offer scientific research and study opportunities to the pupils.

Institute: These higher education institutions provide specialized and postgraduate academic courses to study, and scientific research in a wide range of economic, scientific, and cultural fields.

Academies: These higher education institutions offer programmes to re-train ad enhance the skills of the well qualified specialist. It also offers postgraduate academic courses. 

Conservatory: These higher education institutions offer study courses in Musical field. 

Higher Education Qualifications: Snapshot

Following are the higher education qualifications offered in the Republic of Armenia: 

Specialist Diploma: This qualification provides professional and specialized skills and knowledge along with the general education studies. This qualification requires 4-5 years of study, depending upon the programme specialization.  

Bachelor’s degree: This degree requires 4 years of study at the higher education institutions, or 5 years of study for medicine specialization. 

Master’s degree: To gain admittance into the master’s degree programme, students must hold either a bachelor’s degree or a specialist diploma. 

Doctoral degree: This programme lasts for 2-3 years and is the highest level academic qualification.

Admission Requirements

The admission requirements vary depending upon the educational level and course of study. The basic requirement for entry into the higher education sector in the Republic of Armenia is secondary school education certificate or its equivalent.

Academic Year

The academic year comprises of two semesters, commencing in September and ending in May. Mid-term exams are held in the months of October and March of the respective semesters and a final exam is taken at the conclusion of each semester.

Course Workload

The weekly workload varies depending on the study programme and institution. Generally, the number of hours required per week:
  • For Bachelor programmes: 28-32 hours per week (sometimes up to 36)
  • For Master programmes: 16- 18 hours per week
  • For postgraduate, i.e. doctorate programmes: 4-8 hours per week

Study Visa for Armenia

International students who wish to study in Armenia may first have a tourist visa. Then you can apply to the higher education institution of your choice. Once you get the admission, the respective higher education institution shall apply to the consular department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to get the entry permission for you. After you receive the entry permission, apply for the student visa in your nearest Armenian Embassy.

Tuition Fees

The tuition fee varies depending upon the course and institution of higher education. Generally, the costs of education do not go beyond 4000 EUR per academic year.

Grading System

The higher education institutions use a 2-5 point, 0-10-point and 0-20-point scale to grade the performance of the students.
